Alexander McQueen’s spring 1997 show was titled “La Poupee” after a 1936 Hans Bellmer photograph of the same name. The show channeled the sensual grotesqueness of Bellmer’s deconstructed toy house dolls via metal restraints which ensnared McQueen’s models. Stripes of makeup were painted across the eyes of models, obscuring their gaze and ascribing an inhuman look to them. The clothes were equally risqué, with cut-outs and sheer fabrics exposing body parts, and strange proportions that at times completely sheathed model's faces.

This print first appeared in the spring of 1995, then resurfaced on this season’s runway. It also famously appeared on one of McQueen’s most ardent supporters, David Bowie. It is cut boxy and cropped through the body.
