Tom Ford’s interpretations of the biker jacket are perhaps the best examples of how he melds Americana with Italian sensibilities. The bold blue and white paneling is accented by subdued flourishes, including the use of blocked colors to convey a slimming effect darting might typically acheive. The white tapers from the chest down in a concentric v-formation, accenting the narrowness of one’s waist, compared to the chest, while straight horizontal white and blue lines which split the body likewise create thinness in the midsection. Ford is underrated in the way he successfully manipulates the body through fabric and shape (something we associate with Rick Owens, or Walter van Beirendonck), yet it’s often the root of that barely tangible je ne sais quoi that permeates his work, and separates Tom Ford from his Texan roots, transcending his garments from masculine callbacks to the Marlboro men of yore, to artful examples of tailoring and construction.
