Jean Paul Gaultier AW1986 "Russian Constructivist" Wool Sweater

$1,100.00

Gaultier’s legendary “Russian Constructivist” collection appeared in conjunction with the impending dissolution of the Soviet Union. It occurred at the same time as Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev introduced his policies of perestroika and glasnost, which aimed to create further government transparency and promote dissemination of information. The policies were philosophical kin of some of the ideals which propelled the Russian Revolution, a social movement which Constructivism was inextricably tied to. Gaultier drew these natural connections, and by integrating key visual motifs from the Constructivists, including Cyrillic letters, block type, geometric forms, and photo montage, he was able to delve into the modern day socio-political climate of the Soviet Union.

The knitwear released this season was made with a unique wool blend, which allows the fabric to both stretch with ease, yet carry enough weight to sit flat atop the wearer’s body. The “flat shape” created by this wool allows for the pieces to take on the rigid, canvas-like nature of Constructivism, which emphasized these kind of straight lines and hard edges.
