Jean Paul Gaultier AW1999 Rabbit Fur Fair Isle Sweater

Jean Paul Gaultier AW1999 Rabbit Fur Fair Isle Sweater

$850.00

Jean Paul Gaultier’s fall 1999 collection imbued his signature camp into a typically rugged biker aesthetic. He paraded riding jackets in gaudy sequin and fur iterations, and his models treated the Parisian runway with irreverence, carrying crooked smirks and smoking as they posed.

Gaultier’s knack for appropriating fashion’s intrinsic bourgeoisie excess into something toeing the line between subversion and satire — a trait similarly found in designers such as Demna Gvasalia — was one of the core tenants of his legacy. His Fourrure line, exclusive to the fall 1999 collections, best exemplified this, with recreations of his mainline pieces made of lavish silk and rabbit fur. This sweater retailed for over 5,000 euros, while coats from the line retailed for close to 20,000.
