Raf Simons AW2002 Oversized Distressed Sweater

$1,700.00

Raf’s fall 2002 output, “Virginia Creeper,” deployed camos and bondage-wear amongst innocuous camp sweaters and letterman jackets. It was a perversion of classic Americana. An expounding on the proclivities that simmer beneath the white-picket fences of small towns. It was a wholly unique theme for the fashion world, with kindred spirits more commonly found in works like Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood.” The contrast of civil and taboo garments was a stimulating exhibition of the duality of youth, a desire to both conform and subvert, something Raf's early work such as “How to Talk to Your Teen” similarly explored. Outerwear from the season largely shied away from prints, opting rather to communicate through shape and material, with fabrics as unique as plastic being employed.

“Virginia Creeper” showcased some of Simons’s finest work with layering and silhouette, distorting the shape of outdoors-wear staples such as rain ponchos, fishing vests, and camo hoodies, and placing them alongside communal relics of youth like varsity jackets and camp sweaters. This extremely oversized cable knit sweater belongs to the latter, featuring a “one size” fit that was offered on several of the produced hoodies and sweaters. It’s made with raw hems, which hang loose, creating the kind of unraveled seams which have became one of the collection’s most synonymous details.
