It’s difficult to distill the empire that is Comme des Garçons into one cohesive summary. Launched in 1973, CDG initially caught attention for its brash rejections of what women ought to look like. Rei Kawakubo’s work was characterized by drapey black clothing, often harshly distressed. However, like many one-time punks, age has tempered its fury, and CDG has developed into a cultural powerhouse, with tendrils burrowed into every aspect of fashion and design. In 2017, Rei became to first living designer to receive an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.

Rei Kawakubo’s spring 2000 collection for Comme des Garçons featured a wide range of patchwork garments, including pants, shirts, and as featured here, suits. Each of the suits was one of a kind, as they were produced in small quantities as special orders for customers before the collection hit the shelves. The eclectic fabric was sourced from the Gobelins Manufactory, a legendary tapestry factory in Paris. Extreme proficiency and attention to detail went into the construction of this piece. Shown here in a rare size large in both the pants and jacket, brand new with the original tag still attached.
