Yoshiyuki Konishi AW1999 “Muttley” Sweater
Through the ‘80s and early-mid ‘90s, Yoshiyuki Konishi’s “Ficce” and eponymous label occupied a unique niche within Japanese fashion. Spurning the en vogue cynicism of Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, he produced elaborate, maximal knits that could use up to sixty different colors, (each spool of yarn garment dyed in house, as opposed to purchased already processed). He integrated fabrics such as rope and vinyl tubing into his work, giving a three dimensional element to many of his pieces.
Despite his traditional sense for construction, Konishi pulled from a varied set of influences for his visual motifs, including “Muttley,” a vintage American cartoon character known for his distinct wheezing laughter. True to character, this sweater is layered with several different fabrics and textures.
