Raf Simons AW1998 Anarchy Vest
Many of the pieces from “Radioactivity” derived their narrow, futuristic cuts from the New Wave music scene, specifically pioneering electronic artists like John Foxx and Kraftwerk and Ryuichi Sakamoto, all whom employed rigid, traditional tailoring to express conformity and a looming monoculture being brought about by rapidly advancing technology. Even when Simons employed heavy leather trousers and exposed zippers on his biker coats, he left the silhouettes almost too rigid to breathe, and at other times covered model’s faces with blank moto helmets. The presentation also contained callbacks to the punks of the early ‘70s, expressed in spiderweb knits and iconography of the movement.
This cotton vest is a sterling example of the latter, and features the anarchy symbol with a split down the middle.
