Raf Simons AW2002 "Virginia Creeper" Runway Poncho

Raf Simons AW2002 "Virginia Creeper" Runway Poncho

$4,000.00

Raf Simons’ fall 2002 output, “Virginia Creeper,” deployed camouflage and bondage-wear amongst innocuous camp sweaters and letterman jackets. It was a perversion of classic Americana - an expounding on the proclivities that simmer beneath the white-picket fences of small towns. It was a wholly unique theme for the fashion world, with kindred spirits more commonly found in works like Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood.” The contrast of civil and taboo garments was a stimulating exhibition of the duality of youth, a desire to both conform and subvert, something Simons’ early work such as “How to Talk to Your Teen” similarly explored. Outerwear from the season largely shied away from prints, opting rather to communicate through shape and material, with fabrics as unique as plastic and rubber.

This poncho appeared on the runway, used in one of many elaborate executions of layering crafted by Simons. It’s made with a drill cotton fabric that should remind any Simons enthusiast of the Closer parkas released two seasons later, and waxed zipper sleeves which allow the wearer’s arms to stick out.

We cannot find any other appearances of this garment online, and are very pleased to be able to present it.

Condition: 8/10. Some dirt on the hem. Small tears on both sizes of the zippers. They are symmetrical so it’s hard to discern if they were intrinsic to the garment or not.

Tagged size: O/S. Due to it’s construction it’s nearly impossible to provide measurements for more, but suffice to say it is one size fits all.
