Tom Ford’s tenure at Gucci transformed a label with little to boast besides staid monogrammed work into a maximalist vision of sensuality and excess. Carrying forth the glamour of ‘80s couture in ways both more nuanced and lurid than his predecessors, Ford’s work sparked petitions in the UK to ban his louche advertisements, which utilized taboo subjects such as threesomes and pubic hair to market his clothes, and were denounced as “harmful to society.”

These jeans were featured in numerous looks throughout his fall 1999 presentation, and are made with the elegant craftsmanship that belied the more controversial elements of Ford’s Gucci work. The flowers are each individually embroidered, interwoven with threads which have a subtle shimmer beneath light. The jeans themselves are cut with a slim hip, slight taper, and extended inseam.
