Much of Junya Watanabe’s career has ostensibly been a love letter to London, and no collection made it so obvious as his fall 2014 work. The invitation displayed a hallucinogenic image of unicorns and pandas and other anthropomorphized patrons of an anonymous pub. The grooming of the show veered towards the wayward London youth of the ‘60s and ‘70s, with hair slicked back like teddy boys or worn high in a shapeless mohawk. The pieces were more detailed in their influences than the grooming, though, as Watanabe spanned eras and social classes with his hunting jackets, bowler hats, and eight-button coats. The silhouettes were drawn taught on these pieces, and featured Watanabe’s usual patchwork details. Such scruffy touches allowed them to fit in seamlessly with the latter half of the show, where Watanabe fully embraced his punk influences with a parade of mohairs, tartan, and boots.

This wool sweater was one of several distressed, striped knits to appear on the runway, where it was paired with a top hat, clashing shirt and tie, and patchwork jeans, creating something of a mad hatter visual. It features rips and loose threads throughout the body, and a scoop neck.
