Ann Demeulemeester's vision has changed only incrementally over her decades of work. Her vision of the lovelorn French poet — a Rimbaud or Verlaine — enriched with gothic undertones has stood the shifts of trends, and earned her lifelong fans such as Patti Smith. Her spring 2003 collection offered little elaboration upon such an aesthetic, but stood out for the stunning accessories which graced the runway. Necklaces and belts which declared “sin,” “life,” and “wilder,” catered to the punk-ish proclivities of most of her fans, along with tight, crown-of-thorns-esque chokers.
