Jean Paul Gaultier SS1998 Rosary T-Shirt

Jean Paul Gaultier SS1998 Rosary T-Shirt

$325.00

Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring 1998 show referenced iconoclasts of the past and present, focusing on Marilyn Manson and Frida Khalo. The latter received visceral tribute throughout the show, with numerous models sporting unibrows and crying tears of faux blood.

Gaultier’s work has always been awash with religious iconography. His distortion of the inherent symbolism into chic, dramatic statement-wear has been a key component of many of his most famous celebrity muses, such as Madonna. This collection leaned especially hard into such a visual language, employing recurring uses of rosaries and charm bracelets. The use of trompe l'oeil to craft a 3-D garment was a similarly popular technique for Gaultier at the time, and can be seen in several different collections from this era.
