Walter Van Beirendonck AW2006 Skeletonman Hoodie

Walter Van Beirendonck has never been one to shy away from addressing political and social conflict within the context of his own runways. An ardent believer in the power of spectacle, he has repeatedly used his platform as a way to call attention to issues important to him. Fall 2006’s “Stop Terrorizing Our World” remains as one of his most politically charged works, sending characters down the runway like “The Exterminator,” “Mr Greedy,” (who not-so-subtly were draped in American flags, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s logos) and the decomposing bombshell “Miss Amazon.” Though it’s easy to look at these scourges and adopt a self-fulfilling hopelessness for the world, such an idea is anathema to his outlook, which emphasizes the power of people to change. This idealism was expressed at the mid-point of the show, when the lights cut, and models changed their outfits and makeup and smeared confetti over their faces.

This top’s sweater iteration was worn on the runway by “Skeletonman,” and features numerous unique design quirks. It’s reversible with double-layered construction, which creates an effect as if it were two hoodies stitched together. The inside bears the collection’s moniker alongside Kanji characters.
