Junya Watanabe’s fall 1997 collection created an almost extra-terrestrial Victorian look through traditional plaids, frock coats, and waist narrowing dresses contorted into ultra-slender silhouettes. The models sported tall, pointed white hairstyles that only accentuated the straight lines of the clothing. Watanabe’s punk tendencies showed themselves more so in the ready-to-wear pieces from the collection, which emphasized the use of safety pins to hold torn collars and bodies together. This bright pink mohair clings together with a row of safety pins down its backside, leading to a slashed collar.
