Raf Simons’ spring 1996 collection was one of his first attempts at portraying disaffected, working-class youth — a perennial engine of culture which inspired many of his collections. The collection featured numerous pieces that would go onto be staples of Raf’s work, including oversized sweaters, and razor sharp tops bearing reference to bygone rockstars.

This shirt features the photo of David Bowie seen on his “Aladdin Sane” album cover. Bowie’s androgyny and sexual fluidity was simpatico with the ethos of the season — the collection was presented via a short, cinéma vérité-style video, which showed young men and women hanging out, trading clothes, and mingling interchangeably in bed.
