Raf Simons AW1998 "HMD" Sweater
Raf Simons’ Autumn/Winter 1998 collection stands out as one of, if not the strongest collection of his earlier years. The Kraftwerk-inspired season featured a heavy focus on outerwear and knitwear, as the models walked the runway wearing intricate spider web knits and long coats of black. The cuts of the coats stood out especially, with their razor sharp shoulders and form-fitting drape. The juxtaposition between the classic formal wear and the youthful, boyish cuts is one that grew to become a trademark of the Belgian designer.
This sweatshirt is one of the hidden gems of the collection. It features an ambiguous graphic of a man wearing a Sennheiser HMD 414 headset. It’s composed of a vintage cotton jersey with an overall boxy cut.
