Jean Paul Gaultier AW1995 Circuitboard Top
Gaultier’s landscape changing “Cyber” collection from fall 1995 sent reverberations through the fashion world which are still felt today. Crafted as an expression of his anxieties toward rapidly advancing technology, and the looming Y2K hysteria, the sprawling presentation melded such fears with a Mad Max-esque industrial setting, and was launched with a model riding an actual motorcycle down the runway, leading Vogue to dub Gaultier “the maestro of mayhem.” Georgina Howell remarked more eloquently on the totality of the work, “[Gaultier] applies the imaging and technical advances of sportswear’s body hype, uses attention grabbers the way he does for rock musicians, and transposes finishes from one field to another.” In the twenty-five years since its release, the futuristic prints from this season have never ventured far from the heart of the cultural zeitgeist, and can still be seen popping-up on celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Cardi B.
This devoré velvet top crafts a circuit board via the complex process of burning away the velvet with an acid treatment. The luxurious material employed to do so, and the 3-D depth created as a result, renders it entirely unique when compared to other cyber-inspired prints from the season.
