“It’s not modern to do an exact copy,” Gaultier told Vogue after his spring 1995 presentation. “You have to mix up the decades in order to achieve a modern silhouette” - even a passing glance at the runway underscores Gaultier’s artful execution of such a sentiment.
The centuries seemed to leap back and forth from look to look, with Victorian gowns giving way to flapper dresses and denim ensembles. The references reached back to an even earlier time in European history, as the masterworks of Renaissance art were molded into form-fitting prints. For a finale, Gaultier’s muse Madonna emerged, pushing a 19th century stroller with a small puppy in it.
The collection contained several graphics taken from the works of bygone masters of European art. There were pieces featuring “The Creation of Adam,” “Venus de Milo,” and, as seen here, Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Through the decades, this top has grown into one of Gaultier’s most famous works from his mid-90s heyday.
