Jean Paul Gaultier SS1996 Trompe L'Oeil Muscle Shirt
Throughout the ‘90s, Gaultier emphasized clothing celebrating the natural body — he used razor-thin, body-revealing tops and trompe l’oeil patterns to highlight the sexuality of the male body in a way uncommon for mainstream culture at the time. His most famous of the latter were a series of pieces which portrayed chiseled male torsos, appearing prominently on the runway for the spring 1996 collection.
This top is constructed with a lightweight, breathable rayon fabric, and can be seen in the presentation alongside the matching jacket. Its print later found pop-culture fame after appearing on the red carpet donned by the late Robin Williams.
