Raf Simons’ fall 2002 output, “Virginia Creeper,” deployed camouflage and bondage-wear amongst innocuous camp sweaters and letterman jackets. It was a perversion of classic Americana - an expounding on the proclivities that simmer beneath the white-picket fences of small towns. It was a wholly unique theme for the fashion world, with kindred spirits more commonly found in works like Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood.” The contrast of civil and taboo garments was a stimulating exhibition of the duality of youth, a desire to both conform and subvert, something Simons’ early work such as “How to Talk to Your Teen” similarly explored. Outerwear from the season largely shied away from prints, opting rather to communicate through shape and material, with fabrics as unique as plastic and rubber.
