Wild & Lethal Trash AW1997 Studded Cardigan
Walter’s fall 1997 collection was titled “Avatar.” Though now common lexicon for one’s internet stand-in for their material body, the concept was relatively new at the time, and originated from a late-80s science fiction novel “Snow Crash,” by Neil Stephenson. “The idea of a digital identity really caught my imagination. It fascinated me that you could switch off the body and go through life like a digital fantasy.” remarked Walter upon the subject, and he expressed the notion through complex masks and hair pieces, crafting models into stereotypes of idealized American, Asian, and African figures. The season also marked the first time Walter released an entire women’s collection, though his runways often contained unisex elements in the past.
This heavyweight cardigan is done in a wool and acrylic blend, and features studded detailing throughout, with faux-leather applications and a plastic lightning bolt tag on the back shoulder.
