Jean Paul Gaultier SS1996 Tattoo Sleeve Shirt
In the ‘70s and ‘80s, Jean Paul Gaultier established himself as the “enfant terrible" of French fashion. His evident talent was matched only by his irreverence for the dogmatic industry’s norms, and Gaultier tore down countless conformities of the era. He played with gender roles, putting men on his women’s runway and vice-verse, and cast plus sized women and older men at a time when such was sacrilege. While much maligned by the old guard, Gaultier enjoyed financial and critical success, and his garments became synonymous with a generation of cultural icons, including Madonna, Kurt Cobain, and Marilyn Manson. He also proved to be something of a prototype for the multi-hyphenate designer; conceptualizing a wardrobe for Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element,” hosting a hit TV show, and even releasing a moderately successful dance single.
This longsleeve top is made with a cotton body and mesh sleeves, the latter of which feature Gaultier’s famous dragon tattoo graphic. The visual can likewise be found on numerous works of his, including the iconic “Safe Sex Forever” shirts.
